CLEAR YOUR MEMORY

April 4, 2008

When accessing a database from E-Resources you may get the message that a “search session expired” or you are not able to access a database even though the database is working correctly. This can actually be a technical problem usually caused by an overload of history and temporary Internet files stored within the browser. Just clear both of those items from the browser and then exit the browser and try again.

Netscape: Click on the + beside advance and then click on cache, Clear Memory Cache and Clear Disk Cache

Internet Explorer: Go to tolls and click on Internet Options. Go to Temporary Internet files Click Delete Cookies and Delete Files once done click OK. Shut down your browser and then restart.

AOL: Click “My AOL > Preferences > click www. > general tab > under History, click “Clear History” > click Temporary Internet Files and reduce “amount of disk space to use” to 50.

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES AVAILABLE 24/7

March 21, 2008

Just because the library is closed, doesn’t mean you still can’t access the library. Try our website, and access our eResources like Chilton’s Auto Repair with step-by-step diagnostics or Safari eBooks, professional level technology and business books. If for whatever reason, you have trouble accessing the databases, call the library at 847-923-3322 or e-mail the Reference Desk at refdesk@stdl.org. And don’t forget our other resources, like downloadable audio books, and our 24-hour reference service, Ask A Librarian.

TROUBLE ACCESSING DATABASES

March 19, 2008

Every so often, we get a call from someone who is unable to get into one of our databases. Usually it has to do with the security on the computer. Take a look at your Norton or McAfee settings the next time you’re having trouble accessing a database:

CHANGING NORTON SECURITY PREFERENCES
Open Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall
Click Privacy Control then click Configure
Click the Advanced button
Click the Add Site button
Enter the url for the database, example: www.referenceusa.com, and click the OK button.
On the Global Settings tab, find “Information about visited sites” and uncheck the “Use default settings” entry. Click Permit.
Click OK on the Advanced Window, and then click OK on the Norton Internet Security Window.
